Four Kinds of Damage, Measured First

Each row is a failure class this photo enhancer was benchmarked against before the page went up.

Prints That Faded Long Before You Scanned Them

Cheap paper and forty summers leave a print flat, grainy and soft. The photo enhancer rebuilds edge and grain structure while the scratches stay exactly where they are — it repairs the picture, not the history.

Missed Focus You Only Noticed Back Home

Soft focus is the failure a resize can never undo — enlarge soft pixels, get bigger soft pixels. Of the four damage types on our bench, this is where the photo enhancer pulled furthest ahead.

The Chat App Ate It Before You Saved It

Every forward re-compresses: blocking along edges, mottled sky, smeared skin. It is the class where our measurements put the free-tier photo enhancer ahead of the paid one — blocks out, nothing invented in.

Faces, Where Every Mistake Is Obvious

Faces punish a photo enhancer twice: everyone knows what skin should look like, and artefacts land where people look first. On our compressed-portrait test the default stayed clean, not inventive.

What the Photo Enhancer Actually Changes

Nothing gets repainted. The photo enhancer reads what survived — edge direction, grain, the shape of a blocked-out region — and reconstructs the detail those pixels imply, at four times the frame size. That is why softness, noise and compression blocking come out, and why scratches and torn corners stay: damage that is picture content, not lost signal, is left alone. We measured that, scoring four degraded photos against their untouched originals.

Feed It the Worst Copy You Have

A flatbed scan, a photo of a photo, a screenshot re-sent twice — JPEG or PNG in, rebuilt from whatever detail survived.

This Step Covers

  • Scans and Camera Files

Flatbed scans, phone shots, re-sent screenshots

  • JPEG or PNG In

Output format is yours per pass

  • Biggest Copy Wins

More surviving pixels, more to rebuild

What This Photo Enhancer Does and Does Not Touch

Written as limits: a repair tool is judged on what it refuses to invent.

01Blur

Softness and Missed Focus

Rebuilds edges the lens or the shake took out

02Blocking

Compression Damage

Clears block edges and mottling from re-saved files

03Grain

Noise and Film Grain

Quietens sensor noise without wiping texture

04Untouched

Scratches and Tears

Physical damage is content, so it survives the pass

05Untouched

Colour and Toning

No colourising, no grading; sepia stays sepia

Photos People Bring the Photo Enhancer First

Six drawers that exist in most families and phones.

A Shoebox Scanned One Rainy Weekend

Scanning the family box leaves you hundreds of soft, grainy files and no way to reshoot them.

Typical Photo Enhancer Passes

  • Group photo nobody named
  • Flatbed scan gone soft
  • A print folded for decades
  • One frame, then the drawer
A woman holding a small framed wedding portrait

The Only Portrait Left of Someone

There is one picture of a grandparent, and it is small. It gets enlarged, so invention is worse than nothing.

Typical Photo Enhancer Passes

  • Small print, big frame
  • Passport photo, one copy
  • A face lost to scanning
  • Portrait engine on paid plans
Two friends looking through photos on a phone

The Copy That Came Back From a Group Chat

The original never came back from the phone that took it. What you hold was re-compressed at every hop.

Typical Photo Enhancer Passes

  • Forwarded four times
  • Screenshot of a screenshot
  • Blocking on every edge
  • Waxy skin from re-saving

Sellers Relisting Stock Shot Years Ago

Marketplaces raised their minimum image size; the catalogue did not. The old shot must clear the check again.

Typical Photo Enhancer Passes

  • Shot on an old phone
  • Thumbnail rejected on upload
  • Six listings before lunch
  • Same lighting, more detail
Retouching a mounted picture at a framing bench

The Framing Counter's Enlargement Queue

Someone hands over a wallet print and wants it wall-sized. Detail has to survive the blow-up.

Typical Photo Enhancer Passes

  • Wallet print to A3
  • Mount ordered, file behind
  • Checked at full size
  • Four times the width

History groups copy slides faster than anyone checks them, and every pass must leave the record honest.

Typical Photo Enhancer Passes

  • Slides on a light table
  • Grain kept, not erased
  • One frame at a time
  • Nothing added to the record

Three Moves From Damaged File to Keeper

What you click on the photo enhancer panel, in order.

  1. 01
    Step

    Upload the Largest Copy

Find the original scan or the full-size send rather than the thumbnail — the photo enhancer only rebuilds from detail that is still there.

  2. 02
    Step

Keep the Default, or Go Specialist

The free-tier photo enhancer engine won our bench and makes a fine first pass. Switch to a paid one for a face or a very large file.

  3. 03
    Step

    Compare Before You Keep It

Check the result against your upload at full size. A pass that softened a texture you wanted is worth re-running.

Photo Enhancer Questions Worth Asking First

Limits, evidence and cost, before you spend a credit.

Will the photo enhancer take the scratches and creases out of an old print?

No, deliberately. A scratch is content, not lost signal, so it survives alongside the tear and the stain. Softness, grain and blocking lift.

Can it colourise a black-and-white photo while it repairs it?

No. Colour is invention, and this photo enhancer adds detail rather than opinions. Black and white comes back black and white.

How do you know the default photo enhancer engine is the right default?

We degraded two photos four ways, ran the candidates on identical inputs, and scored each output against the untouched original. The default won all four.

What does the photo enhancer struggle with?

Very fine texture. On our compressed-portrait test it rendered teeth as one clean band, and skin came back slightly smoother than life.

What does one pass cost, and can a free account run it?

Six credits on the default engine, open on the free tier. New accounts open with 10 credits, so a first repair is covered.

Do I need an account before the first photo enhancer pass?

Yes — repair starts once you are signed in, and the cost comes off your balance. A file set up first is held as a draft.

Is the output big enough to print, and what comes back?

Each pass returns the frame at four times its original width and height, as JPEG or PNG — phone-sized becomes wall-sized.
